State electoral redistribution – we're calling for suggestions
8 July 2025
The Queensland Redistribution Commission (QRC) invites suggestions from persons and bodies relating to the current State electoral redistribution.
Anyone who has a suggestion about electoral boundaries or electorate names is encouraged to make a submission to the QRC during the 30-day consultation period ending on Wednesday 6 August 2025.
The QRC has been established to review Queensland’s electoral boundaries as required under the Electoral Act 1992. The purpose of the redistribution is to ensure enrolment numbers are distributed fairly between the State’s 93 electoral districts. The review will uphold the democratic principle of ‘one vote, one value.’
As at 30 June 2025, 15 of those 93 electorates (about 16%) are out of quota - which means they are more than 10% above or below the average number of enrolled electors per electorate. Another 9 electorates are close to being 10% above or below that average. Under the Electoral Act, the QRC must make all necessary changes to electoral boundaries to ensure all 93 electorates are within the State-wide quota.
The QRC is releasing a wide range of information and data to inform the public about the redistribution, and help submitters provide informed suggestions on changes to boundaries.
This includes a discussion paper that explains the legal requirements, an interactive map displaying current and projected enrolment figures and downloadable enrolment data and spatial files.
To help shape responses, all people are encouraged to read the discussion paper and submission guidelines and view enrolment statistics at redistribution.ecq.qld.gov.au.
The QRC is also required under the Electoral Act to name each electorate. Therefore, the QRC is also seeking submissions from the public about current electorate names, proposed new names, and community preferences for naming electorates after places, people or on another basis.
Submissions can be made until Wednesday, 6 August 2025 by:
- Online form: ecq.qld.gov.au/QRCconsultation
- Email: QRCsubmissions@ecq.qld.gov.au
- Mail: Queensland Redistribution Commission
GPO Box 1393, Brisbane QLD 4001
This invitation for submissions is the first stage of a four-stage public consultation process that will occur over the next year.
- Stage 1: The QRC will invite suggestions relating to the redistribution such as proposed changes to electoral boundaries and electorate names.
- Stage 2: The QRC will invite comments on the suggestions received, which will be published on the QRC website.
- Stage 3: The QRC will publish the proposed electoral redistribution and invite any objections against it.
- Stage 4: The QRC will invite comments on the objections received, which will be published on the QRC website.
Following the conclusion of the final stage of public consultation, the QRC will consider all objections and comments and then make and publish the final electoral redistribution. It will come into effect at the 2028 State general election.
Please visit the QRC website at redistribution.ecq.qld.gov.au for more information about the redistribution and how you can participate in consultation.
